A History of AIDS

2006 marked the 25th anniversary since the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced its first warning of the disease later to be known as AIDS. Over the past 25 years, many strides have been made to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS but much more still needs to be done. Your support at AIDSWALK helps us increase awareness and the much needed resources to continue providing high quality services to people living with, affected by, or at risk for HIV/AIDS.

For the second year in a row, AIDSWALK Tucson will host a 100 foot timeline of the past 25 years. The development of the timeline was spearheaded by volunteers and a SAAF youth prevention program and has become a traveling showcase to many local events. The timeline includes local, national, and global statistics of the disease and is a powerful education piece for the community.

1981:
CDC publishes first reports of a rare pneumonia affecting five gay men in Los Angeles: 2 of these men die.

1985: AIDS is now reported in every continent in the world.

1988: Human trials of an anti-HIV vaccination begin.

1990: American AIDS deaths pass the 100,000 mark- nearly twice as many Americans have now died from AIDS cases then those who died in the Vietnam War.
